{"id":726,"date":"2011-09-20T14:21:57","date_gmt":"2011-09-20T21:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/accretiondisc.com\/blog\/?page_id=726"},"modified":"2011-09-20T14:59:43","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T21:59:43","slug":"unixy-mac-tools","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/accretiondisc.com\/blog\/unixy-mac-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Unixy Mac Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m an old-school Unix user, like the guy in the <a href=\"http:\/\/tomayko.com\/writings\/that-dilbert-cartoon\">Dilbert cartoon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That is, honestly, the reason I bought an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everymac.com\/systems\/apple\/ibook\/stats\/ibook_900.html\">iBook<\/a> in 2003, rebooting (as it were) my adventures in the world of Apple, after a 15+ year hiatus.<\/p>\n<p>For condescending Unix computer users like me, the best software comes with a command line interface, or CLI.<\/p>\n<p>Macs ship with a terminal and a collection of CLI utilities. Most of those come from Berkeley Unix, however, and they&#8217;re not as wonderful as some of the alternatives. You can get those with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finkproject.org\/\">Fink<\/a> (my first choice), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macports.org\/\">MacPorts<\/a> (my second), and more recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/mxcl.github.com\/homebrew\/\">Homebrew<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So this page links to my posts (and is a placeholder for posts yet to be written) describing some of my favorite CLI utilities for the Mac.<\/p>\n<h2>The Basics<\/h2>\n<p>bash (and perhaps someday zsh)<\/p>\n<p>coreutils, findutils<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/accretiondisc.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/20\/diff-tools\/\">diff<\/a> tools.<\/p>\n<h2>Compression and Archiving<\/h2>\n<p>zip and unzip<\/p>\n<h2>Digital Images and Photography<\/h2>\n<p>jhead, ImageMagick, various tools to manipulate JPEG images, PNG images, and ICO icons.<\/p>\n<h2>Office Applications<\/h2>\n<p>(These aren&#8217;t apps but utilities for doing things with the documents those apps create.)<\/p>\n<p>antiword<\/p>\n<p>csv-fix<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m an old-school Unix user, like the guy in the Dilbert cartoon.
