(If you go to their site, the\u00c2\u00a0Homebrew project has documentation there, which explains the whole <em>not-use-sudo<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0philosophy and using <code>\/usr\/local<\/code>\u00c2\u00a0now that Apple makes it hard not to, but I don&#8217;t understand it, so it seems like an invitation to having your machine\u00c2\u00a0rooted. But I&#8217;m a greybeard and I quit understanding internet security back when we used <em>uucp<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0because we didn&#8217;t have a real internet. Hopefully someone has thought it through.)<\/p>\n<p>Because I&#8217;m too lazy and ignorant (and possibly stupid) to RTFM, I found a\u00c2\u00a0set of color-by-number <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moncefbelyamani.com\/how-to-install-xcode-homebrew-git-rvm-ruby-on-mac\/\">instructions<\/a> handy, although I didn&#8217;t use anything after <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/xcode\/\">XCode<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(a mere 4GB download) and Homebrew.<\/p>\n<p>$ <code>brew doctor<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew update<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew doctor<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install {lots of good stuff}<\/code><\/p>\n<p>At some point I ran into keg-only and Cellar jabber jabber messages, but (see above) I don&#8217;t understand any of that. I just take whatever advice <code>brew doctor<\/code> gives me and move on from there.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the things I always want on a new Mac (or even\u00c2\u00a0one that&#8217;s 10 years old) include:<\/p>\n<p>$ <code>brew install imagemagick --with-fontconfig<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install colordiff pwgen tree wdiff pstree<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install\u00c2\u00a0pngquant<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install jhead antiword poppler<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install sox lame eye-D3<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install\u00c2\u00a0gnupg<\/code><br \/>\n$ <code>brew install sqlite<\/code><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I set up Homebrew on my iMac.
