One had a failure we were never able to resolve, and another was replaced by an ASUS desktop. The last was decommissioned back in January. So I decided to try installing the most recent Ubuntu 18.04LTS on one of them. Here&#8217;s my notes from the process.<\/p>\n<p>First, re-read this explanation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/175641\/how-to-boot-and-install-linux-on-a-uefi-pc-with-secure-boot\/\">UEFI Secure Boot and Windows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/download\">download<\/a> an ISO and <a href=\"https:\/\/tutorials.ubuntu.com\/tutorial\/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#0\">verify<\/a> it<\/p>\n<p>turn the ISO into a <a href=\"https:\/\/tutorials.ubuntu.com\/tutorial\/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu#0\">bootable USB stick<\/a><\/p>\n<p>boot it up and answer lots of questions<\/p>\n<p>wait while everything gets installed<\/p>\n<p>then install Dropbox and Google Chrome<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install ssh # to get the OpenSSH server<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ ssh some-machine # then copy any data not in Dropbox<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install telegram-desktop<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install gnome-tweak-tool\u00c2\u00a0 # to enable permanent workspaces<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install colordiff antiword jhead csvtool ffe poppler-utils<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install sqlite3 sqlite3-pcre<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install git curl libreadline-dev<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install vim vim-gtk<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install build-essential<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ apt install\u00c2\u00a0libssl-dev zlib1g-dev<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ cd ; git clone git:\/\/github.com\/sstephenson\/rbenv.git .rbenv<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ rbenv -l # to find what version to install<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">$ rbenv install 2.5.1 # or whatever<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago, we bought three HP laptops.
