I used it since the late 2000s. (I forget why I moved from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finkproject.org\">Fink<\/a> to MacPorts.) For the last five (?) years or so I&#8217;ve used <a href=\"https:\/\/brew.sh\/\">Homebrew<\/a>, but I&#8217;ve always been uneasy about making <code>\/usr\/local<\/code> writable, and never convinced by the blandishments on the Homebrew site. I heard about <a href=\"https:\/\/nixos.org\/nix\/\">Nix<\/a>, but before I tried something really different, I thought I&#8217;d give MacPorts another look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, so good. I prefer to need <code>sudo<\/code> to install software. The only real problem I&#8217;ve encountered is that the MacPorts version of <a href=\"https:\/\/pandoc.org\/\">Pandoc<\/a> is so old it can&#8217;t read <em>docx<\/em> files. (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">#sad!<\/span>) But Pandoc has its own installer, so I&#8217;m trying that out too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m setting up my new (old) iMac and I thought I&#8217;d give MacPorts another try.
