{"id":168,"date":"2007-10-26T20:57:05","date_gmt":"2007-10-27T03:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/messofpottage.com\/blog\/?p=168"},"modified":"2007-10-26T20:57:05","modified_gmt":"2007-10-27T03:57:05","slug":"dead-sea-scrolls-sdnhm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accretiondisc.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/26\/dead-sea-scrolls-sdnhm\/","title":{"rendered":"Dead Sea Scrolls @ SDNHM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, a couple of days after we&#8217;d planned to, we saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdnhm.org\/scrolls\/\">Dead Sea Scrolls<\/a> exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum.<\/p>\n<p>I thought it was an excellent exhibit, and I&#8217;m glad I went. There was a lot to see there. Beside the scrolls themselves (or, I should say, odd chunks of miscellaneous scrolls) I was surprised to see how much information they had on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qumran\">Qumran<\/a> site. It was helpful to me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nelc.ucla.edu\/qumran\/\">understand the geography of the site<\/a> better and to see what archaeologists have learned from its ruins. I also liked the displays that helped to explain <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palaeography\">paleography<\/a> and its role in dating the scrolls.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, I found that my Hebrew, which is <a href=\"http:\/\/messofpottage.com\/blog\/?p=154\">on the retreat<\/a> even in the best circumstances, is not improved by putting all the words in an archaic script, in the handwritten equivalent of 8 point type, under thick glass, in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>After we&#8217;d studied the DSS for awhile, we looked at some of the museum&#8217;s other exhibits:<\/p>\n<div align='center'><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/befuddledsenses\/1768858002\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2169\/1768858002_6c9a8ac09b_m.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"Allosaur\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, a couple of days after we&#8217;d planned to, we saw the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum.
